Campus Recycling

EMU began our award-winning recycling program on campus in 1972. Within five years, we’d earned a national Keep America Beautiful award.

In 2004, EMU became the only college in the country to collect recycling entirely by bicycle – we replaced the recycling truck with two bicycles and trailers that each carry up to 300 pounds without using fossil fuels or releasing carbon emissions.

In 2007 we received the Virginia College and University Recycling Program of the Year award, and now we are on track for our third Recyclemania award in as many years.

The details!

Labeled recycling bins can be found throughout academic buildings and residence halls and follow a general color scheme:

Blue bins = Bottles and cans
Green bins = Paper
Yellow bins = Cardboard
Brown bins = Food scraps

Please download the campus recycling guidelines for more detail.
