Guidelines

Students who apply to the undergraduate program must have a high school diploma or equivalent. A completed application file is due by May 1 for students planning to begin course work in the fall semester. After the May 1 deadline, the Admissions Office will continue to review application files on an individual basis as long as space is available in the program. Admission will not be considered until application files are complete.

Please contact Jonathan Kratz, Director of International Student Services, if you have any questions regarding the above admissions procedures by calling 800.368.2665 or 540.432.4459 or emailing kratzja@emu.edu.

Application Process

A completed international student application consists of the following:

  1. A completed international student application form
  2. Application fee of $25 ( U.S.)
  3. Official secondary school transcripts, exam reports, and/or diplomas with certified original signatures and/or seals. All documents must be in certified English translations if they are not in English.
  4. An official score report from an appropriate test.
    1. For applicants whose native language is not English, competency in English must be demonstrated by a satisfactory score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or comparable English test (i.e. IELTS). EMU's institutional code is 5181.
    2. For applicants whose native language is English, an SAT I or ACT test score must be submitted. Scores should be sent directly to EMU. Our code for the SAT I is 5181 and the code for the ACT is 4348.
  5. A financial certificate demonstrating the student's "ability to pay" is required in order for Eastern Mennonite University to issue a student visa application (I-20 form).
  6. For Transfer Students. Official post secondary/university transcripts certified with original signatures and/or seals are required. All non-United States post secondary university transcripts need to be evaluated in order for EMU to accept those credits. We recommend using Education Evaluators International (www.educei.com) or World Educational Services (www.wes.org).

Intensive English Program

Performing in university-level classes requires a high level of English ability. To be admitted to an EMU degree program, international students must hold an IELTS score of 6.5 and must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and achieve a score of at least 550 paper based or 79 internet based. Students whose score is less than 500 (61 internet based) on the TOEFL exam are welcome to enroll in EMU's Intensive English Program (IEP). The IEP helps students achieve the level of English skill required to succeed in a degree program. Upon successful completion of the IEP, up to 15 credits may be applied to a degree program.

Finances

The cost of attendance at Eastern Mennonite University for the 2007-2008 school year is around $32,000. It is possible however to reduce this amount by qualifying for academic scholarships and the international student grant. The amount awarded normally ranges between $1,000 and $12,000 per year. Please consider the cost of our institution before you continue with your application process.  Students who have financial hardship may want to seek sponsorship through churches, organizations, etc. This will be the student's responsibility. Eastern Mennonite University does not provide sponsors for students.

Financial Assistance

Eastern Mennonite University seeks to make education affordable for international students by offering financial assistance. EMU provides both academic scholarships and the international student grant. Plus, for many international students there is the opportunity to work on campus. EMU does not provide full tuition scholarships or grants.

Academic Scholarships are awarded to those students who demonstrate strong academic abilities. These scholarships are awarded based on a student accumulative grade point average (GPA) and test scores (SAT I, TOEFL, ACT). Students will automatically be considered for an academic scholarship when their application has been completed. The International Student Grant was created to provide additional assistance for international students.

The international student grant amount ranges from 10% to 50% of tuition. The grant is only awarded to incoming international students, but is valid for the length of the time required to complete a degree program, maximum of five years. Student must maintain a 2.0 GPA and complete a minimum of 24 credits per year to keep the international student grant.

To qualify for the International Student Grant, applicants must have a completed application (including a completed financial certification form) and be accepted by March 1 . Those applicants meeting all the requirements will automatically be considered for the grant. There are a limited number of grants awarded every year, therefore priority is given to applicants with significant financial need, connections to the Mennonite Church and demonstrate strong academic abilities.

On campus work is available for international students studying at Eastern Mennonite University. This can range from being a Community Advisor on a resident hall, to assisting in the game room, to working with dining services. Immigration regulations limit the number of hours a student can work during the week. Normally, International students can earn around $900 per semester.
