Royals drop second straight game losing to Apprentice School by a score of 14-5. Third baseman Hunte
Harrisonburg, Va. – The Royals were looking to rebound from a tough loss to Bridgewater College on Monday afternoon as they hosted the Builders of Newport News Apprentice School in a non-conference game today.
Things got off to a rocky start for the Royals (11-22-1) as they gave up two runs in the first inning. Darrell Taylor, the leadoff batter for Apprentice School (23-9) reached base on a throwing error and stole second base to move into scoring position. Adam Blackmon connected on a single down the left-field line and Taylor rounded third to score the first run of the game. A bad throw to the pitcher after a pick-off attempt allowed Blackmon to advance to second base with Rob Arredondo at the plate for the Builders. Arredondo reached first base with a single up the middle and Blackmon came home to score the second run of the inning.
The Royals kept the game close by scoring a run in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman Seth Berry (Fishersville, Va./Covenant) recorded a leadoff single down the left field line and moved to second base on a single through the left side by sophomore Brad Steshoski (Front Royal, Va./Warren County). Junior Chuck Miller (Wellman, Ia./Iowa Mennonite) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third and senior Chris Severs (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) stepped to the plate with two runners in scoring position. Severs hit a worm-burner at the shortstop that scored Berry, but Severs was thrown out at first base on the fielders choice. At the end of the second inning the score was 2-1 in favor of the Builders.
Apprentice School started to pull away in the fourth and fifth innings. The Builders scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning and four more runs in the top of the fifth inning to increase their lead. The Royals managed to score a run in the bottom of the fourth inning as Steshoski crossed home plate on a RBI triple by Miller.
But the Builders continued to pour it on scoring four more runs in the top of the eighth inning before the Royals could respond with any offense. Heading into the bottom of the eighth inning the Royals trailed 14-2.
In the eighth inning freshman Hunter Reed (Greenville, Va./Riverheads) drove in senior Jeremy Auker (Bassett, Va./Bassett) with a two run homer that cleared the fence along the left-field line. In their final at-bat the Royals scored final run of the game as junior John Lonneman (Petersburg, Va./St. Vincent de Paul) drew a walk then stole second and third base to move into scoring position. Senior Casey Severs (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) drew a walk, as did junior Kevin Forry (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) to load the bases. Auker stepped to the plate and grounded out to second base, but Lonneman crossed home plate for the Royals fifth run of the game.
The Royals take on Lynchburg College on the road in an ODAC double-header this Saturday at 3:00pm.
