James Coan, Ph.D.

Jim Coan is Assistant Professor of Psychology, member of the Neuroscience Graduate Program, and director of the Virginia Affective Neuroscience Laboratory at the University of Virginia. Coan’s research focuses on the neural systems underlying emotion, emotion-regulation and social behavior. He lives and works in Charlottesville, VA.
Dr. Coan is a recent recipient of the inaugural Janet Taylor Spence Award for Transformative Early Career Contributions from the Association for Psychological Science. He co-edited the book Handbook of Emotion Elicitation and Assessment with John J. B. Allen.
