Performers
Mariette Southard , a seventh grader at Wilbur Pence Middle School in Dayton, has played violin for nine years, has been a member of the Shenandoah Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra since 2004, won first place in the Bland Music Competition in 2006 for the Lions District 24-C Region 1, Zone 3, and won Honorable Mention in the Valley Symphonic Concerts Young Instrumentalists’ Competition in 2007. She plays regularly for churches and other organizations. Marriette’s violin teacher is Maria Lorcas.
Ben Elliott, a fourth grader at Grace Christian Elementary School in Staunton , displayed early interest in music by singing for an audience at the age of four. His piano study began that same year, and for the past two years, he has received a double superior rating at the Harrisonburg Music Teachers Association Piano Festival. He is a member of the Shenandoah Valley Children’s Choir, accompanies the worship team at Tabernacle Presbyterian Church, and performs as a gospel and contemporary soloist. Other interests are reading, hiking, geocaching, and soccer. Ben is a piano student of Dr. Eloise Kornicke.
Benjamin Roth, a high school senior, has played viola for four years and has taken violin lessons for six years. In addition, he plays piano and guitar. Ben has played in numerous orchestras and ensembles, including the Shenandoah Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra for seven years, the EMU Community Orchestra for six years, the South Central Virginia Senior Regional Orchestra for three years, and the All-Virginia Orchestra (2006). Ben studies viola with Dr. Joan Griffing.
Bergen White is a senior at Eastern Mennonite High School . She began studying piano at the age of seven and placed second at the state level of the VMTA auditions in 1999. Receiving double superior ratings at the HMTA Piano Festival five times, she also received a cumulative points trophy twice. A five year winner of the National Guild Auditions, she was one of eight finalists at the VMTA middle school piano division. Bergen plays clarinet, percussion, and harp in her school orchestra, sings in the EMHS Touring Choir, plays harp in the Shenandoah Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra, was selected to play harp in the Regional Orchestra, and was a member of the Shenandoah Valley Children’s Choir for six years. A National Merit commendation recipient, Bergen enjoys volunteering at the Children’s Museum, travel, and dance. She plans to major in harp and biology in college. Bergen studies harp with Jessica Frost.
Lauren Winegard, a senior at Spotswood High School , has played clarinet for six years and piano for ten years. She plays principal clarinet in her school wind ensemble and keyboard in the jazz ensemble. At SHS she has received the John Phillip Sousa band award, three academic band medals and the Best-in-the-Music-Department medal. She has been selected for five years for the District V Honor Band, two years for the Senior Regional Orchestra, and two years for the Symphonic All Virginia Band. Lauren enjoys debating, photography, reading, and sports. She plans to major in music performance on clarinet and to become an anesthesiologist. Lauren is a clarinet student of Les Nicholas.
Lena Risser, a junior vocal performance major at EMU, is from Greencastle , PA. She has been involved with music all her life, often singing for special events with her four siblings. In addition to being active in music performances at her school and church, she participated in many music theater productions in her local community theater. Having taken voice lessons since she was thirteen, she has also played piano and flute in high school and won the Rhine Scholarship Award for excellence in multiple instruments. Lena studies voice with Jennifer Cooper.
