Cover Letter & Résumé Tips
- Customize every cover letter and résumé for the position to which you are applying
- Highlight your best information on the top 1/2 to 3/4 of the page – focus on experience relating to position
- Don’t use more that two graphic elements at a time (bold, italics)
- Use bullets
- Begin each bullet with an action verb
- Don’t use first person pronouns (I, me, etc.)
- Stay away from periods – use concise fragments with commas and semicolons
- Remain consistent with your tense, punctuation, capitalization, etc.
- Quantify as much as possible (increase in sales, percentile rank in class, number of customers served)
- If E-mailing, use .pdf file; if mailing, use high quality resume paper
- Proofread thoroughly and have someone else review for spelling, grammar and punctuation
