STAR is presented in an introductory five-day workshop held in Harrisonburg, Va., at Eastern Mennonite University (EMU). The workshop is taught by the faculty and staff of EMU’s Center for Justice and Peacebuilding.

The training combine lectures with experiential and interactive activities. Learning happens through presentations, physical activity, creative expression, and interaction with other participants. Bodywork, meditations from different spiritual traditions, and reflection are woven into the experience.

The STAR experience provides the basics about trauma, peacebuilding and restorative justice, with examples of activities and ways to begin to integrate this knowledge into participants’ work and communities.

Workshop topics

  • Trauma Overview & Definitions
  • Trauma Healing Journey: Strategies Breaking the Cycles of Victimhood/Violence
  • Trauma Interventions
  • Self-Care for the Caregiver
  • Restorative Justice

  • Framework for Peacebuilding

The STAR seminar is intensive and interactive and participants are required to stay for the entire seminar. Since the demand for certain dates may be high, early registration is important.

  • All participants are expected to be open to exploring issues within a multi-cultural, multi-faith group.

STAR staff reserves the right to ask a participant to withdraw from the seminar early if, based on our experience and judgment, his/her conduct impinges on the emotional safety of the group.
