By attending a STAR training, you join a network of persons from over 38 states and 62 countries who believe that by working to heal trauma we can help break cycles of violence.
In response to requests from our network, we have developed levels of STAR training which build upon skills learned.
Level I: STAR Practitioner
Training Required: Attend a Level I STAR training (Youth STAR training may also qualify)
Level I STAR Training Objectives
- Define types of trauma and recognize the impact on body, mind and spirit
- Understand the relationship between unhealed trauma and cycles of victim-hood and violence that can affect us for generations
- Apply the STAR model, The Trauma Healing Journey: Breaking the Cycles of Violence to individual and group situations
- Use new skills to address trauma and build resilience
- Relate trauma to the justice needs of survivors and offenders and to basic peace-building concepts that help transform conflict and prevent more trauma
- Recognize the risk of compassion fatigue for caregivers and identify prevention strategies
Benefits of being a STAR Practitioner
- In the Level I STAR training, participants will receive the STAR manual and will learn the STAR framework with others from various cultures and disciplines from around the world.
- Training participants may request up to 25 Continuing Education hours if applicable to their profession
- STAR Practitioners are able to practice the STAR skills and implement the framework in their personal and professional life
- STAR Practitioners may sign up to receive email updates of practice and training, as well as the “Peacebuilder” Magazine (with stories of trauma healing, conflict transformation, and restorative justice from around the world)
- May choose to further professional or personal development and become a Level II STAR Instructor
Level II: STAR Instructor
Training Required: Levels I and II STAR
Level II STAR Training Objectives
- Share examples of how the STAR skills and framework may have been used or applied in your personal and professional context
- Explore new theories and application for individual and community-based trauma, justice and conflict transformation
- Examine new STAR materials for specific audiences (i.e. youth, returning veterans & their families, descendents of slaves/slave-owners, illiterate persons, etc)
- Learn and practice new exercises and skills that promote healing and build resilience
- Have opportunity to contextualize the STAR skills and framework to your professional or community setting
Benefits of being a STAR Instructor
- In the Level II STAR training, participants will receive a Level II STAR manual and will interact with persons using STAR concepts from around the world.
- Training participants may request up to 25 Continuing Education hours if applicable to their profession
- STAR Instructors are qualified to provide STAR trainings in their professional or community contexts
- STAR Instructors are provided access to the STAR web-forum which is a members-only, on-line discussion group for STAR Instructors, Trainers (Level III), and Staff Trainers from around the world.
- Participants in the Level II training will have opportunity to purchase resources, including power-point that will assist them in conducting training.
- Note: STAR Instructors have permission to train others as STAR Practitioners but not as Instructors.
Level III: STAR Trainer
Training Required:
STAR Levels I, II, and III Persons are selected by STAR staff to participate in a STAR Level III training. Trainers are selected with overall attention to regional trainer needs around the world. Trainers are qualified to conduct Level I and II trainings.
Level IV: STAR Staff Trainers
Persons must be employed by EMU’s Center for Justice and Peacebuilding in order to be a Level IV Staff Trainer.
