YPCA - Help with church music, Sunday school classes, or organizing church services in a small, near-by church.

Our Community Place - Our Community Places hosts a free weekly community meal, maintains a garden, and runs other programs. Help with whatever is needed at the time!

Gift and Thrift - Gift and Thrift is a non-profit organization that houses three shops: a World of Good (an MCC Thrift Shop), Artisans’ Hope (a fair trade, Ten Thousand Villages partner store), and Booksavers of Virginia (a used book seller). All shops support the work of MCC. Volunteer opportunities vary depending on schedule and interests: sorting, pricing, general cleaning/maintenance, etc.

Refugee Resettlement - Connect with a recently resettled refugee family by helping through a variety of ways.

Biology, Chemistry

Earthkeepers - Composting and recycling projects at EMU.

EMU Recycling - Help work for and promote EMU recycling. Be an eco-rep for your dorm.

Friends of Blacks Run Greenway - Help with various projects related to the Black's Run stream's health.

Glen Eco Farms - Help a local farm with fall market gardening work: cultivating, weeding and harvesting.

SPCA - The Rockingham-Harrisonburg Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Help with "pet socialization."

VA Cooperative Extension - Provide assistance with developing and implementing food, nutrition, and health education programs.

Business and Economics

Valley Associates for Independent Living (VAIL) - Provides an array of services to individuals with disabilities to ensure independence in the community. Voluteer with filing, typing, special projects as needed, including accessibility surveys and a November Basket Bingo event.

ARC Op Shop - The ARC Op shop where adults with mental disabilities make marketable crafts. Assist with woodworking, crafts, communication or social skills and leisure activities. Work along side participant or small group.

Refugee Resettlement - Connect with a recently resettled refugee family by helping through a variety of ways.

Central Valley Habitat for Humanity - Help build with Habitat this fall on N. Liberty St.

Gus the Bus Early Learning Program - Help with reading, assisting with homework, tutoring and mentoring with Gus the Bus mobile literacy vehicle. Also behind the scenes opportunities are available i.e making puppets, flannel board stories, and other activities to go with storybooks read on the bus.

Fulks Run Family Literacy - Help with the activities for the children, take pictures and video at family literacy events for a year-end slide show.

Parents as Educational Partners - Help with homework, recreational activites with a diverse group of children while their parents participate in English classes.

Migrant Education - Help tutor students who are learning English as a second (or third) language in the local schools. Another opportunity with Migrant Ed is to help with ESL workshops in the county's "Apple Camps."

Boys & Girls Club - Assist in the planning and implementation of Boys & Girls Club programming within 5 core areas: Education, Character & Leadership, the Arts, Health & Life Skills, Sports, Fitness & Recreation. Boys and Girls Club is housed in the Lucy Simms school, formerly Harrisonburg's African American school.

Justice, Peace and Conflict Studies

Harrisonburg Men’s Diversion Center - Shadow caseworkers and assist with case management issues when possible. Observe or co-facilitate treatment groups when appropriate. Tutor offenders in school under direction of DCE teachers.

Salvation Army Soup Kitchen - Help with soup kitchen prep, serving and clean up and meet community members.

Mercy House- Help with the Mercy House homeless shelter through as a tutor, with childcare, or office assistance.

Trinity Clothes Closet - Help families with children find clothing that are the right sizes, interact with children while parents are shopping, help fold and bag clothes for families, at end of day help fold and return clothing not taken to racks, put away racks (Spanish speakers are encouraged and would help with translation.)

Intensive English Program - Be a conversation partner with an English-learning student in EMU's IEP program.

Booksavers - Booksavers is part of Gift and Thrift, a non-profit organization that supports the work of MCC. Volunteer opportunities vary depending on schedule and interests: sorting, pricing, general cleaning/maintenance, etc.

NewBridges Immigrant Resource Center - NewBridges exists to address the spiritual, emotional, social, and cultural needs of immigrants in the Shenandoah Valley, empowering them to become interactive participants in the community and congregations. Help with English classes, childcare during classes, or as a client contact assistant.

Skyline Literacy Coalition - A volunteer literacy organization committed to the improvement of literacy/English language levels among adults in the Harrisonburg/Rockingham County area. Designed to foster community awareness and inter-organizational cooperation. Volunteer as a tutor or help with one of their other programs.

Umbau School of Architecture - "Umbau is a laboratory for space, land, and ritual. We are about making architecture. We thrive upon risk, failure, experimentation, and discovery. The students and faculty at Umbau must learn how to see. Opportunities to help with occasional special event setup, general office assistance, editing, helping with built projects, errands, assisting in printing, mailings, critique for design visuals, etc.

WVPT - Local TV Station. Opportunities to help with various data entry, auctions, mailings, pledge drive, camera operations.

Our Community Place - A few years ago, the documentary class did a project recording the life of Our Community Place. Help with meals, gardening, building projects and much more!

Friends of Blacks Run Greenway - Last year a student used trash gathered from the Blacks Run stream in a multimedia installation. Help with various projects related to the streams health.
