McArthur family
When I was invited, I didn’t know what to expect.
People at home asked, “What are you going to do? And I said, “I don’t know.” I’ve never been to anything like this. I almost didn’t come.
I didn’t know anything about the McArthur family until I started studying genealogy. My great great grandmother’s name was McArthur. And I didn’t know my grandfather but there were a few things that he had brought when he left Alabama. I got in contact with the town historian where he came from, then I made a trip down there because she told me, “If you come down here you can go through his house.”
One of the main reasons I came was to meet my “partner.” She told me that her family were slaves in the McArthur family. I knew they had slaves, but I didn’t think that I’d ever meet anyone that is connected. As it turned out, she couldn’t make it to this event. But I’m glad I came.
I want to tell people when I go home about this. I belong to a Bible study group and I think I’ll talk to them about this and see how they react. I live in a very white society. |
