Participatory-action research was used in an academic-community partnership to explore shared decision making in mental health. It was agreed that sharing in decisions regarding medications with their psychiatric providers might increase overall follow-through for consumers, leading to better self-management, clinical outcomes, and quality of life. Considering the Role of Antipsychotic Medications in my Recovery Plan is an electronic, interactive decision aid created to help consumers take a larger role in self-management of their illnesses. Determining its effectiveness to improve outcomes in a randomized controlled trial will offer a valuable contribution to the study of shared decision making in mental health.
Dr. Irma Mahone is a Research Assistant Professor at the UVA School of Nursing. Her current research focuses on shared decision making in medication use by persons with serious mental illness. She is currently seeking funding for Effectiveness of a Decision Aid for Antipsychotic Medication Use, a randomized controlled trial to determine the feasibility and effectiveness of a decision aid for antipsychotic use. She served as a consultant to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)-contracted project creating the interactive, computer-based decision aid, Considering the Role of Antipsychotic Medications in my Recovery Plan. She was PI for Shared Decision Making and Medication Use in Public Mental Health, a participatory-action-research study, funded by the School of Nursing – Rural Health Care Research Center; with the goal of exploring and developing best-practice methods for implementing shared decision making in routine community mental health practice using.
