Music faculty artist series: Richard Becker, composer and pianist

Where Martin Chapel

Duration 1 hour

Visiting composer and pianist Richard Becker will perform a solo recital in Martin Chapel. He will also give a masterclass in the afternoon from 3-4 (selected piano students will perform and receive comments addressed to the audience and the student).

The evening recital program will include both compositions of Richard Becker and the celebrated work of Robert Schumann, “Kreisleriana”. Mr. Becker will talk about poetry and activating the creative response in composition, and discuss connections between narrative tendencies in music and poetry.

He will perform three sets of his own pieces, some linked to poems he has studied: 4 songs after poems by Emily Dickinson, and also “Elegy”, after Duino Elegies of Rainer Maria Rilke.

Don’t miss this great opportunity to experience this combination of music and poetry.

The recital is free. Donations are welcomed for the EMU music scholarship fund.
