CJP student Promeet Singh will present his capstone, entitled, “Bridging the Gap – U.S. Law Enforcement Interpreter Training.”
Blue Ridge Area Health Education Center (BRAHEC) located in Harrisonburg, focuses on health and on the community. BRAHEC, in collaboration with the Harrisonburg Police Department, proposed the development of a formal manual which will be used by interpreters who work with local police to ensure that city residents who do not speak English well can engage with law enforcement authorities. Law enforcement agencies operate within a culture of policies and procedures which govern all aspects of their jobs. A written language usage manual can guide officers and other staff on how and when to use language services and, more importantly, make them sensitive to other cultures which could potentially reduce the extent of misunderstandings caused due to language barriers. This manual was developed by Promeet for his practicum assignment.
Hot drinks and cookies will be served.
