Shenandoah Valley Youth Symphony and Shenandoah Valley Children's Choir Concert

Where Lehman Auditorium

Duration 1 hour 30 minutes

The Concert and Treble Choirs of the Shenandoah Valley Children’s Choir (SVCC) are thrilled to be sharing the stage, on November 24, with the Shenandoah Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra for their joint Fall Concert. The SVCC is now in its 23rd year of bringing musical artistry, excellence, education and fun to children and young people ages 5-18. Some past performance highlights have included singing in Hawaii and Italy, at Carnegie Hall in New York City, at the White House, at JMU’s Investiture Ceremony for its current President, and for many professional music educators’ and choral conductors’ conferences, as well as for our most important audiences right here in the Valley!

SVCC’s most advanced choir, the Concert Choir (ages 11-18), and its intermediate choir, the Treble Choir (ages 9-14) will begin the concert with several selections from a variety of time periods, styles and genres, from Handel to Spirituals. Selections come from the Choir’s full season repertoire to be performed at their annual Christmas Concert on December 15, when they will be joined by the youngest performing choir, the Preparatory Choir (ages 7-10).

Following the Children’s Choirs the 50-member Youth Symphony will perform under the direction of Rhonda Stees. Selections include: – The “Egmont” Overture by Beethoven – Concerto in E minor by Vivaldi, featuring Senior cellist Caleb Schrock-Hurst – Carmen Suite No. 1 by Bizet – The Lord of the Rings by Howard Shore, arranged by John Whitney

Orchestra members are from the city of Harrisonburg, Rockingham, Augusta, Shenandoah and Page counties and West Virginia. In addition 10 university students from EMU, JMU and Bridgewater College will participate in the concert.

The evening’s featured soloist selected by audition in May 2013 will be Caleb Schrock-Hurst, son of Luke and Carmen Schrock-Hurst of Harrisonburg, VA. He has been studying the cello for seven years. His current private teacher is Lisa Wright. A senior at the Eastern Mennonite High School in Harrisonburg, VA, Caleb is principal cellist with the EMHS Orchestra, and he has been principal cellist with the Youth Symphony for two years. He has been selected by audition several times for Junior Regional and Senior Regional Orchestra. An avid tennis player, Caleb has been ranked as an All-State tennis player. In addition is a member of the EMHS Touring and Chamber Choirs. Caleb has been named a National Merit Scholar Commended Student.

A $5 donation is requested that will benefit scholarship students in both organizations.
