About the author: Shirley Hershey Showalter grew up on a family farm and went on to become the president of Goshen College and a foundation executive at The Fetzer Institute. She is now a writer, blogger, and consultant living in Harrisonburg, VA. She is the mother of two adult children and grandmother of two little ones. She and her husband Stuart spent the 2011-2012 academic year taking care of grandson Owen while living in Brooklyn, NY. Most of her memoir was written in Brooklyn. (blog)
