Earth Day Forum: Leading for the Common Good Through Sustainable Design

In honor of Earth Day, EMU is hosting an event organized by the Virginia Chapter of the Sierra Club. The panel presentation and tour of EMU sustainability projects is open to media outlets and community members, as well as the campus community, in order to raise awareness about what one small organization can do to make a real difference in carbon output.

Schedule:

10:30 a.m., gather in the Brunk-Maust lounge of the Campus Center for coffee and mingling.

11 a.m., panel discussion hosted by Christine Baer, SGA co-president and environmental sustainability major, followed by Q&A in Strite Conference Center, Campus Center room 105.

Panel presenters include:

Kai Degner, Harrisonburg City Councilman bringing greetings from the city.

Dr. Loren Swartzendruber, EMU president on the historical commitment to sustainability at EMU, faith, values and creation care.

Jonathan Lantz-Trissel, EMU sustainability coordinator and manager of EMU’s recent submission to AASHE’s STAR sustainability ranking system for colleges, in which EMU earned a silver ranking.

Lisa Schirch, PhD, peacebuilding and development professor who will present on “security and sustainability”

Jim Yoder, PhD, biology professor and faculty advisor to students in EMU’s environmental sustainability program.

Tony Smith, PhD, business and economics and MBA professor, who was key in establishing EMU’s solar array, the largest in the state of Virginia at the time of installation in Nov. 2011. He will speak on the business aspects of sustainability and solar initiatives.

Following the presentations and Q&A participants can take tours of EMU’s solar array atop the Hartzler Library and/or a campus-wide sustainability tour to view cisterns, edible landscaping, composting systems, etc.

Guests are also welcome to stay on campus for lunch in the dining hall to continue conversations.

The coffee break and events of the morning are sponsored by the EMU graduate leadership programs: MA in organizational leadership, MBA, and Collaborative MBA (online).
