This and That

Finding Time

If a person wants to do something bad enough, they will find time to fit it in. One thing that I love about college at this time of year is when all of the students are trying to finish up projects and papers. Even though they may have procrastinated on the upcoming deadlines they still manage to get together to go to IHOP on half-price Wednesday. A group of my friends crowded around the table for a good two hours and escaped the stresses from life and school. After the intense night of laughing and talking I thought that in just two weeks, finals will be over and the trek home will begin once again.

Women: An Intricate Design

This semester I have been taking a class called Opera Scenes which meets every Tuesday night. The class is made up of all girls, with the exception of the pianists, and we are now going to perform our final show, “Women: An Intricate Design” this Saturday night at 7:30pm in Martin Chapel. Oddly enough, the class is not structured around opera but instead, musical theatre. The program consists of compiled songs from different musicals about the stages of a woman’s life. The songs are beautiful and entertaining and if you are looking for something to do this Saturday night, come up and enjoy the night with us; I guarantee a good time.

Green Thumbs and Green Grass

It is the first of December and for the most part, the grass remains green. The temperature is a constant 60-65°F with the exception of wind today. I am ready to pull out the sweaters, talk about how cold it is and have to bundle up in coats, scarves and hats. But I do have to say, it is feeling more like Christmas on campus everyday. Physical Plant put up the annual Christmas light tree in the fountain and last night, since it was not cold at all, after working in the papermaking lab, I sat outside and enjoyed the lights and garlands on campus and the lights of the Harrisonburg.

As I was walking back to the woods with green hands and arms from working with green pigments, some of my friends stopped me and commented on how they liked the green pigment that I accidentally smeared on my face. It looked like I had grown a green mustache and had numerous smudges on my nose. All I have to say is sometimes when the nose itches, it needs to be itched. But have no worries, I went back to Elmwood, scrubbed and then thought about all of the humiliation and humor people go through all for the sake of art.

Meanwhile, after all the drama of green thumbs and noses, there are some things that are still green on campus. The feeling of the season is shown through our friends and peers. This is the time of the year when we all strongly embrace each other and are thankful for all the blessings in our lives.
