Owen D. Byer
Owen joined the Eastern Mennonite faculty in 1999 after teaching at
Northwestern College (IA) for three years.
He received a Bachelor's degree in mathematics with secondary certification at
Messiah College in Grantham, PA, and a Master's
degree and Ph.D. in mathematics at the University of
Delaware in Newark, DE.
Owen's primary mathematical interests are combinatorics and
extremal graph theory (a branch of mathematics created in large part by the
late Paul Erdos). While his academic pursuits
have mostly occured in mathematics, he has taught "War and Peace" and "Bridge" as part of the Honor's Programs
at Northwestern and EMU. His other hobbies include playing basketball and bridge, gardening, and following
the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Miami Dolphins. Owen and his wife Barbara have been married
since January 1990. They are active members at Weaver's Mennonite
Church in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Their son Cameron was born on October 20, 1998 and their daughter Lillian
(adopted from China in July 2002) was born on August 21, 2001.
