"excited for my classes to start"
When I left my home in Hubbard, Oregon, early in the morning on Friday the 27th to come clear across the country to Harrisonburg, Virginia, I really had no idea what to expect. I didn't know anyone my age at this school, and it was about as far away as I could get without leaving the country. I was leaving behind all my friends, most of whom opted for in-state schools, my family, and everything that was familiar to me.
Needless to say, I was extremely apprehensive about being in college and on my own. It took my mother and I about a day to fly from Oregon and then drive to EMU. By the time I arrived everyone was moved in and it seemed that everyone had already made friends! This only added to my nervousness as I unpacked my things, met my roommate, and tried to get settled for my first night in college.
Fortunately, people made every effort to reach out and make me feel at home! I was warmly welcomed by the staff as well as the other new students. My roommate, Karra, is especially nice; I think we'll get along great this year!
On the first full day our orientation groups did local service projects, and my group worked at Crossing Creeks, a farm that will be used as a therapeutical center for people with mental illness. I had a great time gettting to know my group; and although the weather was much hotter than anything I've ever experienced before and the work was difficult, I left with a definite sense of satisfaction.
The rest of the weekend went by quickly, as it was packed with activities for orientation. I spent most of my time meeting new people and trying to remember everyone's name. Within a few days my apprehension has lessened, and I have already begun to feel more at home. I am excited for my classes to start and to really begin my college experience!
