Another day, another debate

November 10, 2005

Welcome to Thursdays.
It's another one of THOSE days, you know, where I have two classes and nothing else to do, so I log on to my weblog and decide that I should tell you guys something interesting!
A couple nights ago, we had an event at EMU known as the tunnel of oppression. This 'tunnel' was basicly a guided tour through the campus commons, that took us from station to station, and we were made to look on what can only be described as the worse parts of racism in America. We actually learned a lot from the experience, but the one part that bothered me the most was a station known as the Gauntlet. There, we were verbally bombarded with so many racist and crude statements that I felt like some people were going to cry. It was definitely a hard experience, but in some ways was probably necessary to get the point of the verbal oppression we take create against one another across. I felt like it was one of those bad days in grade school, when everyone thought it would be fun to give you a hard time in the hallways, and so I just shrugged it off and moved on. Overall it was a very educational experience, but I'm still not much of a night owl, so getting out after 11pm was a bit rough.
I've somehow gotten onto the committee for Spiritual Awareness week here on campus, and so i'm really busy trying to get some stuff worked out for that. I've got the task of writing some stuff for the various events, and hopefully I can help out at some of the concerts and do fun stuff like that once that week roles around. College overall has been good, with a lot of new things for me to try out, and it feels like I've worked out a routine to fit fun activities in around my classes... not that that matters since we get to register for brand new ones tomorrow, but still, I can't wait to see what some of these new classes will be like.
I think my new favorite phrase is "In-house exam". Our spanish class isn't going to meet tomorrow (which means I get to sleep in) and so we won't be in class to take the test, so our prof. has put the thing up on Blackboard so that all the students get to take the exam from the comfort of their own dorm rooms! I can't help but wonder: Why can't all exams be like that? It's gonna be so cool being able to just do the thing whenever I feel like tomorrow (before midnight anyway) and not feel pressured by a time constraint to finish up. Not to mention that I can just lounge around and drink soda while I type it up. How cool is that?
We talked about some deep stuff today in my First Year Seminar class, like as far as race and oppression goes, so I've definitely got some stuff to think about now. Luckily, with sleeping in, I get to stay up late tonight and chew over some of the issues that came up, as well as drink copious amounts of Mt. Dew and hang out with people!
Well, I've got some other stuff I should probably get done tonight, so I'm gonna end this entry with this last thought:

If caf food falls in the forest, and nobody is around to eat it, does it still stink?

be you
