...And we're back!

January 12, 2006

...And we're back. Christmas break went so fast, yet was so wonderful. It was great to have the whole family at home for Christmas this year. There seemed to constantly be people at our house, which made things exciting and crazy at the same time. Highlights included: surprising my parents by bringing Dave home a few days early, a day at the beach, quality conversations with family and friends, family dinners, a day in New York City, playing on the ice at Bergey Pond, "decorating" random Christmas trees, sleepovers, New Year's Eve, Dave's Indian food, and much more... But now it's back to reality, and already it seems like I've been back for a long time. One of the best things about returning to EMU was getting to see friends again and catch up about what everyone did over break.

I have seventeen credit hours again this semester, but I think I'm going to have to do a lot more work for my classes than I did in the fall. I'm taking Molecules to Cells, Zoology, 2D Design, Exploring Teaching, Living Faith, and Orchestra. I'm exciting about some classes, and a little nervous about others. It will definitely be a challenge. Hopefully these classes will give me some insight into what I will eventually major in.

The top ten events of the week so far (in no particular order):

1. Spiritual Life Week with John Bell. I've heard John speak four different times this week, and have enjoyed each time. He has a great sense of humor that serves to emphasize his insights on God and the Christian Faith. On Wednesday night Briana Gascho and I walked to Park View Mennonite for the service of singing. All the songs were centered around the pentatonic scale, and John Bell led us in singing pentatonic songs from around the world.

2. Finally recieving my books for classes in the mail after ordering them online a few weeks ago...yay for saving some money!

3. Chasing an opposum around campus after it ran across my path as I exited the campus center...it eventually ended up in a small tree on a branch that was about my eye level. We stared at each other for a long while, until I finally gave in and returned to Northlawn to finish some homework.

4. Catching up with friends about their Christmas breaks

5. Being Katie Lehman's "victim" one late night in Maplewood as she demonstrated how to do CPR.

6. Having a cancelled class already in the first week of the semester. Having no 8 AM class on Tuesday or Thursday, a luxury I did not have last semester, is also quite nice.

7. Hiking with my brother Dave, who is in Harrisonburg for the week. We never found the trail we were looking for...instead we ended up creating our own trail for an hour or so until we came upon some strange clearings in the woods that led to another trail. The weather here has been absolutely beautiful lately; it does not feel at all like January! God's creation is so amazing...it was wonderful to explore on this warm day and get a little dirty once again :).

8. Walking and talking with my sister Maria, after making breakfast at her house.

9. Dinner in the Royal's Den with Theresa, Erica, and Lindsay.

10. Getting a letter in the mail from my friend Alicia, who attends college in Montana.

I'm sure there were more exciting things that happened this week, but I just can't seem to think of anything else...

Some not so exciting events of the week:

1. Many hours of required reading.

2. Feeling very lost during my molecules to cells lab, since I have not had a Chemistry class since my sophomore year of high school.

3. Missing friends from home.

4. Adjusting back to a different sleep schedule

5. A rainy wednesday

6. Coming back to cafeteria food
