IC3 Foreign Film Series Forum Instructions

For all students whose professor has enrolled you in a class that uses the Foreign Film Series, please follow these steps to post your responses to the films:

  1. Go to EMU’s website (www.emu.edu).  On the homepage, click on “Hot links” and toggle down to and click on “blackboard.”
  2. Or if you are already in an IC3 lesson, jump to the “Best Answer” section of the lesson, and click on “FORUM” under “Blackboard Instructions.”
  3. Enter your username and password; your professor has a copy of these.
  4. “Foreign Film Series” will appear as one of your courses.  Click on this link.
  5. In the upper left corner, “Forum” is one of the menu items.  Click on this link.
  6. Toggle to the name of the film that your class has just viewed.  Click on this link.
  7. Read and consider the postings already submitted.
  8. To enter your response, you have two choices:
    1. Add a “new thread” of discussion.
      1. To do so, click the toggle at the top of the page that reads “add a new thread.”
      2. Type in your title for this new thread in the “subject” box.
      3. Be sure your title is clear enough to invite other posting students to submit their related thoughts under your new thread.
      4. Type your message into the “message” box.
      5. Be sure that you have carefully written and proof-read this message first as a Word document.
      6. Cut and paste your Word.doc into the message box.
      7. Click “submit” at the bottom of the page.
    1. Reply to a message that has already been posted.
      1. To do so, click on the “subject” line of that person’s message (do not click on that person’s name, since that will only send an email to a single person, not the forum).
      2. Type your message into the “message” box.
      3. Be sure that you have carefully written and proof-read this message first as a Word document.
      4. Cut and paste your Word.doc into the message box.
      5. Click “submit” at the bottom of the page.
  1. Please try to follow the dates listed for each forum discussion of a film.
    1. The discussion date is intra-cultural and in-class.  It generally occurs within two days of the film’s screening.
    2. Post to the inter-cultural forum within two dates of your in-class discussion.
    3. Over that week, read the responses from other countries and communities.
    4. Post a reply to the “generative themes” that arise from the dialogue.  These themes may follow the storyline of the film or go well beyond the film, itself.
    5. To the extent possible, each “community of learning” that is using the IC3 learning platform and Foreign Film Series forum should adhere to the posted dates for viewing and posting.  Please let other partnering communities know in advance if your class/community cannot post by these dates.  From experience, we have learned that the dialogue simply does not happen if it is strung out over too long a period of time.  Late postings are not likely to have much if any reply online.
