Internet Bandwidth Increase for 2008
Information Systems is pleased to announce a 50% increase in Internet bandwidth for 2008! We were able to redirect funds for underused telecom resources to make this improvement possible in the middle of the academic year.
The daily limit for students in residence halls has increased to 500 Megabytes. The overall connection for the university is now 15 Megabits/sec.
Please be aware that EMU's Internet connection is an expensive and constrained resource. Your consideration allows the other 1000+ community members to make use of this increasingly vital resource.
Although this change provides a substantial bandwidth increase for the institution, students will still need to be careful in their use of their Internet connection. Significant use of a webcam, YouTube, watching TV episodes or downloading movies can cause your daily bandwidth usage to exceed 500 Megabytes.
Also, illegal P2P file sharing is strongly condemned by the university. Agents for the RIAA constantly scan for illegal file sharing. When EMU receives notification of a violation, the offending computer Internet connection is blocked, and the student is referred to Student Life for violations and sanctions processing.
