Web
Events Calendar
Available for posting ALL EMU-sponsored events (even events
loosely connected to EMU) and events to which the EMU community
is invited.
Web calendar events can be posted by a variety of departmental contacts. If you don't know who is your contact, email the information you wish to have posted to the Web Content Manager (webcontent@emu.edu). The Web Content Manager can post it, let you know who a departmental contact might be, and train new people to use the simple database for posting events.
Using the web calendar instead of "everyone" emails will lighten the number of emails people receive. This in turn may make us all more alert to "everyone" emails, rather than simply deleting them without opening (which many people do). If everyone is "forced" to look to the web to learn about events, opinions and more, the practice will become habit.
Postings on the web calendar can be strengthened by adding
as much detail as possible to the description. Better yet,
you can link in the announcements directly to other web sites,
or detailed information that's already posted on the EMU site
(press releases, for example).
EMU
Campus Connection
The EMU Campus Connection web page displays all the
latest information from the eClassifieds and web calendar.
There is a section for Special Notices, where non-EMU events
can be promoted.
Web
eClassifieds
This is the place to post requests for rides to/from somewhere,
for missing items, items for sale, jobs, etc. Anyone viewing
the web site can post a new listing by clicking on make
a new ad. Those ads posted by a person not using a valid
EMU id will go first by the web content manager, as a system
for screening potentially inappropriate postings. Such ads
are usually processed within a 24-hour (48-hour over weekends)
period.
Forums
The forums, or "on-line opinion board" is a place
for people to share opinions and ideas. We wish more people
would use it!This would be an ideal place to share concerns
about political issues (Iran sanctions, Mid East peace process),
local issues of concern (new bike trail, Simmons school, etc)
and garner support.
Listserv
Lists
The EMU email system provides "distribution list"
functionality provided with a list-server mechanism.There
are two major categories of listserv lists implemented at
EMU. Limited lists are created by specific "owners"
who typically maintain them and public lists which are created
by the system administrators. The public lists are further
described in the table below. When considering the use of
a public email list, please review the description
of these lists and the restrictions that apply to them.
NOTE: After sending a broadcast message you will need to allow at least 15 minutes before you are likely to see your copy of the message arrive in your email mailbox. Depending on the load of the mail server and the number of names in the broadcast list it could take even longer. DO NOT re-send the message just because you have not seen your copy. Call the HelpDesk (x4357, 540-432-4357) if you suspect there may be a problem. Sending the message again will likely result in two messages going to all the addresses on the broadcast list you have used.
WARNING: There is a "maximum message size" limit for all EMU listserv email messages. Any message containing more than 40,000 characters of data will NOT be delivered. If attempted, the message with the attachment will be "bounced" to the owner of the list and will NOT be delivered to the list recipients. In general this means that you CANNOT send attachments to EMU listserv addresses.
