Leaving Campus and Summer Virus Protection

What do I need to know about using my computer over the summer?

When you leave campus for the summer, your computer should continue to function in basically the same way that it did when you were connected to the EMU network. There are a few caveats depending on which version of Windows you are running, so below is some version-specific information.

Windows 98/Millennium Edition (ME)
No changes need to be made. When not connected to the EMU network, the Novell login screen should not appear. If it does, simply click Cancel and you will be able to use Windows normally.

Windows XP (Pro and Home)
Even when not connected to the EMU network, the Novell login screen will continue to appear. To use your computer, check the box that says Workstation only and then log in using your Windows username and password (whatever you usually enter in the second login box). Continue reading for XP Home-specific information.

Windows XP Home
Important: We have had one case of a Windows XP Home machine acting strangely when not connected to the EMU network. If your computer runs much more slowly when not connected to the network, follow the steps below to remove the Novell client. If you do remove the Novell client, it will need to be reinstalled when you return to campus, so please contact the Helpdesk when you come back in the fall.

What about virus protection over the summer?

As long as Sophos Remote Update is installed on your computer, you will continue to recieve updates.

What do I do when I leave campus permanently?

When you take your computer off campus for good, the main thing you will probably want to do is remove the Novell client. The procedure is fairly simple -- it's just like removing any other program.

Follow these steps to remove the Novell client:

  1. Click Start -> [Settings] -> Control Panel
  2. Choose Add or Remove Programs
  3. Find Novell Client for Windows and click it
  4. Choose Change/Remove or Add/Remove
  5. Answer Yes, and Novell will be uninstalled
  6. Reboot when instructed to do so and then move to the "Other" section below

Other Items
The following items should only be removed when you take your computer off campus for good.
