Student Spyware Policy
Information Systems does not clean spyware infected computers.
Information Systems has found students who are willing to provide this
service. These students are not employed by IS and operate independently from EMU. EMU is not responsible for problems that arise if you choose to use one of these students.

These students will charge fees similar to what Information Systems currently
charges.
Another resource that InfoSys recommends is WildWires (574-2459,
www.wildwiresonline.com),
a local company that charges $35/hour.
InfoSys will continue to disinfect computers that have been infected with W32
viruses. If
your computer gets a virus, please take note of what it is. The current list
of viruses that
EMU IS will not disinfect includes the following:
Troj/Dloader, Troj/Lalus, Troj/Briss, Troj/Istbar-R, Troj/Small-ID, Troj/Bettlnet-A,
Troj/Sandbox
These viruses are related to spyware and will disappear when spyware from an
infected
computer has been eliminated. If you bring your computer to us and we find only
these
types of viruses we will give it back to you without resolving the problem.
How to keep your system clean:
One way to avoid infecting your computer is to regularly run trustworthy anti-spyware
applications such as Spybot and AdAware, information about these applications
can be
found at www.emu.edu/is/selfhelp. In order for them
to be effective, however, you need
to check for updates at least once a month. You may stumble upon some other
antispyware
applications but be weary of them, some of them will actually infect your
computer instead of clean it. Other ways to combat spyware are to use internet
browsers
such as Firefox, which can be downloaded at mozilla.org,
or by using the Google
toolbar for Internet Explorer. The best way to avoid spyware is to steer clear
of known
spyware applications such as:
| 180Search Assistant | Bonzi Buddy | Hotbar | RealVNC |
| Ad Destroyer | CoolWebSearch | IEPlugin | ShopAtHome |
| Ares | Download Accelerator | iMesh | TVMedia Display |
| AvenueMedia | Gain | Internet Optimizer | WeatherBug |
| Bargain Buddy | Gator | Kazaa | WildTangent |
| BearShare | Go!Zilla | Ncase | WinTools |
