Recommendations and Information

Bringing a computer to campus?
Here's what we recommend:

We encourage students to bring computers to EMU. Though we have more than 150 Windows PCs and Macs in the labs, it's hardly enough for 1200 students since more and more classes require the use of a computer to complete assignments. Furthermore, our accrediting association requires that our students graduate "computer literate," so a computer is a good investment.

New or Used?
Though we strongly recommend getting a new computer.

Mac or Windows?
The choice of Mac or Windows is an entirely personal one. EMU fully supports both platforms, so you can follow your preference with confidence.

Windows PCs

EMU supports Windows XP and Vista
Do not bring a computer running Windows 95, 98, ME, or 2000, as we do not support it.

If you are buying a new PC, Dell has some special offers you may want to consider.

Macintosh Computers

EMU supports Macs with OS X.

If you are buying a new Mac, Apple has some special offers you may want to consider.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to get connected in my dorm room?

For $65 a semester, on-campus students will have high-speed access to the Internet, email, and online EMU resources, including the Library. Additionally, EMU's file servers provide you with personal network disk space that is secure and backed up nightly. All of this can be accessed right from your room.

What are EMU's standard software packages?

EMU has standardized across campus on Microsoft Office Professional for both Mac and PC. The Microsoft Office Professional suite for Windows includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook (the Mac version substitutes Entourage for Outlook and does not have Access).

We have special pricing for students on Microsoft Office Professional for Windows and Mac.

Because Microsoft Office is the campus standard, students will find that having Office installed on their computer eases document and file exchange.

What if I live off campus?

EMU email can be accessed anywhere you have internet access and a web browser (more information). The Novell servers are also accessible -- via NetStorage. Off-campus Internet service must be purchased from a provider of your choice. Connections to the EMU Network for commuters are available in the Library. If you are a commuter with a laptop and want to connect to the EMU network there is a $15/semester access fee.

Does EMU offer wireless network access?

Information Systems has hotspots in key areas of campus, including the Library, Snack Shop, Coffeehouse, CJP, Seminary and Campus Center Greeting Hall. There is not wireless access in the dorms. Students however, are allowed to bring their own wireless access points, but they must be registered with Information Systems.

How does EMU protect against viruses?

In order to ensure that your computer and others on the network are protected against viruses, EMU requires an anti-virus program that is updated at least monthly and is operational at all times while your computer is connected to the network. To achieve this, EMU's standard anti-virus software must be installed on your computer. This necessitates the removal of any other anti-virus software from your computer, which will be done by IS technicians when your computer is set up for the network. For more information about EMU's virus protection, read the FAQ about Sophos.
