Acquisitions -- Interlibrary loan -- Library instruction -- Reserves
Acquisitions: top
Faculty recommendations account for the majority of items purchased by the library. Each department is allocated a part of the library's materials budget for periodicals, books, videos and other materials. Items purchased by the library remain a part of the library collection. Requests for new materials may be made in numerous ways.
Yankee Book Peddler, Inc. (GOBI3) This service allows for submission of book requests online. This service requires an account name and password. Contact Audrey Shenk at x4172 or by email at shenkaj@emu.edu for these. Mac users should use Mozilla Firefox rather than Safari. Request functions will not work in Safari. Click here for instructions on usingYankee.
You may also submit requests on paper request forms the Library can supply.
When an order for any type of material is placed, the item immediately appears in Sadie, the online catalog with the designation ON-ORDER in the copies field. As soon as an item arrives from our distributor, the ON-ORDER designation is changed to INPROCESS. You may view a list of recently received materials by looking at the New Acquisitions list. This list is updated weekly on Monday morning. Recently cataloged materials are listed on the New Book Shelf list, updated weekly on Saturday.
All items receive a temporary call number, generally beginning with XX. Although INPROCESS items are not on the shelf, they are available during the week to library patrons within 24 hours. Please contact Jennifer Ulrich at x4173 or by email at ulrichjm@emu.edu for INPROCESS materials.
Interlibrary Loan: top
Use interlibrary loan for items the Hartzler Library does not own. You may submit requests electronically by following this link to the interlibrary loan page. If you are using indexes through FirstSearch or EBSCOhost please use the interlibrary loan options in those services. For questions about interlibrary loan contact Dawn Nyce at x4174 or by email at dawn.nyce@emu.edu

Reserves: top
Faculty may want to place a variety of non-textbook materials on reserve at the library to maximize required resources. You may bring materials for reserve to the Circulation Desk. Your name and EMU ID, course number and course name are required in order to place materials on reserve properly. Please be advised that reserve materials are arranged on the shelf by title and it is helpful if your syllabus reflects this arrangement. A wide variety of material types may be place on reserve; books, videos, DVDs, and photocopies of articles and/or chapters of books. Each individual article or chapter should be placed in a manila folder with your name and class on the folder.
Faculty are responsible to be in compliance with Copyright Law/Guidelines when photocopying materials for reserve and classroom use. This link gives more information about Copyright.
By using persistent or durable links to full-text articles in databases licensed by EMU, faculty are in greater compliance with Copyright Law then by making a digital copy and placing it in Blackboard. Most databases provide some type of persistent or durable link. EbscoHost databases provide a persistent link on each individual record. Links in Ebscohost include the EMU proxy server address for authentication. Gale databases use the term "Infomark" and this is located in the top left hand corner of article records. Faculty should add the following to the beginning of the Gale Infomark https://inserv1.emu.edu/login?url= for authentication purposes. You may contact Jennifer Ulrich (x4173 or ulrichjm@emu.edu) for more information.
Materials are placed on reserve for one semester at a time, unless other arrangements are necessary. At the end of each semester materials are taken off reserve and any personal copies are returned to you via campus mail. For questions about Reserves contact Bonnie Bowser at x4182 or by email at bowserbw@emu.edu.
