Staff Responses to the 2013 Library survey

  • Some of you find Sadie’s searching capability to be less than desired. We’re hopeful that an upgrade later this year might improve things.
  • Since some of you did not know we have a “books for fun” collection, it has been moved to a more visible spot on main floor and the new arrangement is designed to catch your eye.
  • We agree with you that we need more gathering spaces and it’s time for a facelift on main floor. We have a plan for renovations of the library space and architectural drawings are being prepared. The administration advises that this project will need to wait a few years until other priorities are completed. Meanwhile, as we have moved journals online, this has freed up space on main floor for table gatherings. Notice other attempts to brighten up our space, such as new artwork.
  • Fall semester should see a pilot project in selling coffee in the library. Watch for that! Also we now have board games for check out in response to student request.
  • Some of you complained about noise in the library so we have asked staff and work-study students to take note of this.
  • Sometimes we couldn’t determine the nature of the problem you cited. For specific problems, don’t be afraid to ask a staff member for help. Our staff is here to help you!
  • Someone requested more books in foreign languages. If there are specific books in Spanish (the one language major on campus) that you need, please request them through your faculty or a librarian.
  • Regarding more e-books, we give priority to our distance education programs in purchasing e-books. Let us know e-books that you would like to have in those programs.
  • You asked for more electronic resources to scholarly journals. In the past year we have moved many of our print journals to online. Did you know that we currently purchase nearly 60,000 electronic journals through our databases or individual journal subscriptions? If you want to know what journals we have, access the A to Z list on the library website. For other questions about journals you seek, see a librarian.
  • There were a few fixes by Information Systems that your comments suggested. We have requested IS to make them.
  • You told us that music classes in the library are distracting so we are arranging for them to go elsewhere.
  • There were a few complaints about things that work-study students did not know. We have added emphasis to those things in training our students.
  • We looked into your suggestion of access to our online databases for alumni but cost is a factor. With limits on resources, we gave this a lower priority.
  • Note that we already purchase all Newberry and Caldecott book winners.
  • Yes, our movies are in the online catalog.
  • Yes, printing costs are published online, see the library policies page
  • You asked for more space on first floor for education majors. That does not seem possible now that the Help Desk and a CJP classroom have moved to the library.
  • It would be nice to have a first floor entrance as you suggested, but we would need to staff a second desk to be sure books don’t walk off.
  • In some cases, we rejected your ideas as not feasible at this time. Keep your ideas coming and we will evaluate each one.
