Nursing Guide

These are resources for nursing students who wish to use the EMU Hartzler Library, assembled by a senior nursing student and a librarian. You’ll find a list of reference recommendations, recommended print and electronic indexes, useful Internet sites, and other tips for using nursing materials here at our library.

Books you can check out

Find library books, videos, and other resources with Sadie, Hartzler Library’s online catalog. While you will find the titles of journals in Sadie, you will not find the articles contained within those journals.

For help narrowing a topic or understanding its broader context, use the Library of Congress subject headings books at the library. As always, consult the reference desk personnel for advice if you are having difficulty.

Nursing Journals

Hartzler Library subscribes to over 35 nursing journals as well as over 40 general health-related journals. Additionally, recent articles from over 270 medical journals are available online through library databases.

Recommended Indexes for Finding Journal Articles

These indexes are available in the online database index. Passwords for accessing some of these databases from off-campus are available by calling the reference desk (432-4185). Listed in order of recommendation:

  • CINAHL (Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature) covers nursing, allied health, biomedical and consumer health journals, publications of the American Nursing Association, and the National League for Nursing. Indexes over 1000 periodicals and covers 1982 to the present date. Access to this index is through OVID. This index is also available in the library in print.
  • MEDLINE provides article information from journals published internationally, covering all areas of medicine. Covers 3500 periodicals from 1965 to the present. Access to this index is through FirstSearch Password.
  • PsycINFO is the major index for psychology and related fields. This database provides coverage from 1887 to the present and contains citations for journal articles, books and chapters in books, dissertations and other materials. Access to this index is through OVID Available in the library in print as Psych. Abstracts from 1960 to 2000.
  • Health Source Nursing/Academic Edition: Available on the library’s Electronic Databases page, this EBSCOHost database provides access to over 520 scholarly full text journals focusing on many medical disciplines. Also featured are abstracts and indexing for over 560 journals.
  • PubMed: Provides access to the 9 million citations in MEDLINE and Pre-MEDLINE (with links to participating online journals) and other related databases. (The library staff requests that EMU students, faculty and staff use FirstSearch Password to access MEDLINE in order to get more searching power plus the ability to request interlibrary loans electronically.)

Beyond Hartzler Library: Interlibrary Loans

At times you will find resources that are not available at the EMU library but you can access them through interlibrary loan. You may submit a request by following these steps:

  1. Check whether EMU Hartzler Library owns the particular item you need. Check Sadie, the online catalog, or check the Periodicals Holdings List for journal titles.
  2. When using FirstSearch or EBSCOhost, you should submit ILL requests through these services. For help please contact the reference desk at 432-4185.
  3. You can submit ILL requests online. There are two different forms, one for books and one for journal articles. When using these forms please fill them out as completely and accurately as possible.
  4. When using OVID, please e-mail the citations you would like to receive through ILL to yourself. Then forward that message to after your name, phone number, and class status to the e-mail.
