Take a moment to look at the sample screen below. This is what you see when you enter Sadie. (You will explore the "Advanced Search" later.)

The screen is set to the way most people search Sadie or what librarians call a keyword search. The box to the right of where you enter your search terms is set to "words or phrase". This means the computer will look for your search terms in any part of the records in Sadie.
Okay, let's get started! You will do the most basic search: words or phrase. Let's see what is in the library about African art. In the search box, type in "african art." (You don't have to capitalize African, but it's okay if you do.) You can use your mouse to click on Search Catalog or simply press ENTER on the keyboard. Either way, you get the same results.

Notice where it tells you how many records you found: 72 records. But the screen only has room to display 20 records at a time. You could use your mouse to scroll down to see the remaining records (4-20).
What you see is a brief list of the results of your search.
If you want to see the full record for one of the items that looks interesting, click on the DETAILS button. And here's what the full record looks like.
The full record includes not only the title and author, but also who it was published by and how many pages the book has in it. You will need to click on the "Catalog Record" tab to see what Subject Headings were assigned to this book. "Copy Info" lets you know who many copies there are and if they are available. The call number is at the bottom of the record.
Return to the original list by clicking on the "Go Back" button toward the top.
All right! Now you've seen how to do the most basic search in Sadie. This is also the most general search. It's useful when you're just getting started with researching a new topic.
