Sider to Give Lecture Series at EMU

Ronald J. SiderAn internationally known author and speaker will present the annual Augsburger Lecture Series Thursday and Friday, Oct. 30-31, at Eastern Mennonite University.

Ronald J. Sider, professor of theology, holistic ministry and public policy at Eastern Seminary in Philadelphia and president of Evangelicals for Social Action, will give three presentations on evangelism and social action themes.

Dr. Sider will speak 9:30 a.m. Thur., Oct. 30 in Martin Chapel on “An Historic Opportunity for American Christians.”

A reception for the speaker will be held 6:45 p.m. that evening in the fellowship area of Martin Chapel, then at 7:30 p.m. he will address the topic, “Ethical Challenges of Global Capitalism.”

The series will conclude 10 a.m. Friday in Lehman Auditorium with a chapel presentation, “Living Like Jesus.”

Books and other materials related to Evangelicals for Social Action will be available at each speaking engagements.

Sider's life’s work blends evangelical concerns with a passion for social justice. He has published 15 books, including the influential "Rich Christians in an Age of Hunger," hailed as one of the single most important Christian books published in the 1970's.

Other books published in the past three years include "Good News, Good Works," published by Baker Book House, an invigorating and passionately biblical call to the church to embrace the whole gospel through the combination of evangelism, social engagement and spiritual formation.

The speaker received a B.A. degree from Waterloo Lutheran University, a B.D. degree from Yale University and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in history from Yale.

He is publisher of "Prism" magazine, a contributing editor to "Sojourners" magazine and corresponding editor for "Christianity Today."

Sider is the father of three and lives in Philadelphia's inner city with his wife Arbutus, a family counselor, and their daughter.

The Augsburger Lectureship was established by EMU president emeritus Myron S. Augsburger and his wife Esther to bring noted speakers to campus to address topics in areas of Christian evangelism and mission.
