EMU Gearing Up for New Year

Activities to usher in the 2003-2004 school year at Eastern Mennonite University will start with the annual faculty-staff conference, Aug. 14-15.

The two-day program on the theme, "Living Out Our Vocation in an Anabaptist Community of Faith, will be held in Martin Chapel of the seminary building.

Presentations on the theme will be given by Mark Thiessen Nation, associate professor of theology at Eastern Mennonite Seminary; Sue Biesecker Mast, associate professor of communication at Bluffton (OH) College; and Dale Schrag, director of church relations at Bethel College, Newton, Kan.

Two questions will provide a framework for input and discussion during the conference:

    • How has your faith commitment and your faith community shaped your vocational path, calling and life's journey?

    • In what ways do Anabaptist values make a difference in how we do our work at EMU?

Judy H. Mullet, professor of teacher education, and Jack Rutt, director of Information Systems, will give personal reflections from their respective vocational areas.

Both days will begin with worship led by Kenneth J. Nafziger, professor of music. Other activities will include workshops for faculty and staff, a look at the year ahead by EMU interim president Beryl H. Brubaker, introductions of new personnel, a cholesterol screening, and a picnic on the front lawn for all EMU employees, retirees and their families.

All participants have received copies of a paperback commissioned by Mennonite World Conference, "From Anabaptist Seed" by C. Arnold Snyder, to read in preparation for the conference.

Student leaders- including community advisors and campus ministry and pastoral assistants - will begin arriving Aug. 15 for orientation, and student orientation staff training will start Aug. 20.

New students will check into the residence halls Saturday, Aug. 23. Orientation programs for new students and their parents will run through Sunday noon, Aug. 25.

Returning students will arrive on campus Sunday, Aug. 24.

Fall semester registration will be held Tuesday, Aug. 26.

Fall semester classes will begin 8 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28. Beryl H.Brubaker, interim EMU president, will speak at an opening convocation 10a.m. that day in Lehman Auditorium on the theme, "What is this place?"
