Food and Farming Week

When you pay tribute to farmers, you’re saying a mouthful.

Eastern Mennonite University will seek to underscore that sentiment in observing its third annual "Food and Farming Week," Apr. 3-5.

"We want to blend education and fun in raising awareness of where our food comes from and how that affects the way we consume," said David J. Brubaker, a senior math and computer science major at EMU and student organizer.

Activities will begin Thursday, Apr. 3, with a petting zoo on the front lawn of campus, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Community persons are welcome to visit.

Wayne Teel, a professor in the Integrated Science and Technology Program’s environmental sector at James Madison University, will give a chapel address 10 a.m. Friday, Apr. 4 in Lehman Auditorium on "Eating as an Act of Defiance."

Dr. Teel teaches environmental science, hydrology and related topics at JMU and also teaches a "Food and Population" course in the Adult Degree Completion Program at EMU. He earned a Ph.D. from Cornell University and worked in several African nations in agroforestry, soil fertility and erosion control.

Teel will also speak at a Suter Science Seminar 4 p.m. Friday in room 104 of the EMU Science Center. Admission is free.

A "Food and Farming" display will be open in the Greeting Hall on ground floor of the EMU Campus Center Thursday through Saturday. Visitors can receive information on everything from mad cow disease to cooking with whole grains.

A tour of Glen Eco Farms, Marlin and Christine Burkholder's organic farm operation in Singers Glen, will be offered Saturday. Persons should meet for the tour at 2 p.m. at the Hartzler Library cul-de-sac.

EMU alumna Janelle Myers Benner, an administrative assistant in the Conflict Transformation Program, will lead a bread baking workshop 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Apr. 5, in room 22 of the Suter Science Center.

Events will close with a barn dance 8-11 p.m. Saturday in the old gymnasium on ground floor of the University Commons. Admission is $1.

For more information on activities, contact David J. Brubaker at 437-6028 or brubaked@emu.edu.
