EMU-Hesston Sign Articulation Agreement

The process of transferring from Hesston College, a two-year school in Hesston, Kan., to Eastern Mennonite University, is now a bit easier.

According to undergraduate academic dean Marie S. Morris, Hesston and EMU have signed a "general education articulation agreement" that assures Hesston graduates that their associate of arts or associate of science degrees will be fully accepted and will grant students admission to EMU with "junior" class standing.

Beginning with the Hesston College graduating class of 2004, Eastern Mennonite University will accept the associate of arts and associate of science degrees as meeting the Eastern Mennonite lower-level general education requirements. While all other competencies, prerequisites and upper level general education requirements must be met on the same basis as any other EMU student, Dr. Morris anticipates that the Hesston degrees may also meet some upper level requirements and cross-cultural requirements.

The main qualifier in the new agreement is that certain EMU degree programs have specific grade point average admission requirements which all Hesston graduates must meet in order to gain admittance to these programs.

In addition, the associate of applied arts and sciences degree that Hesston awards is not included in this agreement. Graduates of this degree will be considered on an individual basis, and courses will be assessed on a course-by-course basis.

Dr. Morris noted that EMU has had a long history of cooperation with Hesston College in facilitating the transfer of students from the two-year school to the four-year university.

"As an alum of Hesston College, I am delighted to take a more formalized approach to this relationship and further ease the transfer process," she said. "Hesston students bring a unique academic experience which serves to enrich the EMU campus learning community."
