Fifteen incoming students have been accepted into the honors program at Eastern Mennonite University for the 2003 2004 school year.
Judy H. Mullet, professor of teacher education, is faculty director of the honors program. She welcomed the group to campus at a reception Aug. 23.
"During your time at EMU you will make friendships to last a lifetime while you explore new understandings of God's work in the world," Dr. Mullet told the students and their parents. "We look forward to your contribution to our campus as you train for leadership in your communities and churches.
"The honors program at EMU is made possible by an endowment fund and is designed to recognize students with outstanding academic and leadership qualities.
The program includes an academic scholarship award, a specified curricular component and a one-to-one mentoring relationship with a faculty member. Faculty mentors provide academic and career assistance and identify opportunities for the students to become involved in research, conferences and special academic projects.
Of those honors students admitted this fall, two received full-tuition scholarships and 13 were awarded half-tuition scholarships, renewable for three years with satisfactory academic performance.
The scholarship recipients are: Trevor Bare, Lancaster, Pa.; Jonathan Beckler, Mechanicsville, Va.; Emily Benner, Pennsburg, Pa.; Nathan Bontrager, Akron, Pa.; Rebecca Drooger, Swansea, Mass.; Amanda Gross, Atlanta, Ga.; Cheryl Heatwole, Riner, Va.; Jonathan Keener, New Holland, Pa.; Peter Nelson, Harleysville, Pa.; Kendra Nissley, Columbiana, Ohio; Rachel Sims, Perkasie, Pa.; Timothy Shenk, Harrisonburg, Va.; Philip Shirk, Conestoga, Pa.; Aaron Trimble, Eagle River, Ak.; and Galen Wenger, Chesapeake, Va.
Applicants are chosen through a highly selective process that includes academic acheivment, leadership activities, personal references, an essay and an interview with a professor.
"I am delighted to welcome these new honors students this fall," said Marie S. Morris, undergraduate academic dean. "We have found over the years that our honors students fill important student leadership positions on campus, contribute greatly to a stimulating academic life and go on to make significant contributions to a global society."
