The Eastern Mennonite University department of music will draw on its many resources and talents to present Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Requiem mass in D minor."
The EMU Chamber Singers, University Chorale and EMU-Community Orchestra, under the baton of Dr. Kenneth J. Nafziger, professor of music, will perform Mozart's last composition, perhaps one of his most powerful and recognized works, at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, in Lehman Auditorium at EMU.
There has always been debate surrounding the work as to how much of the music Mozart managed to complete before his death and how much was later composed by his friend and pupil, Franz Xaver Süssmayr. Despite this, it has taken a prominent place among the canon of Mozart's most iconic works.
The program will open with "Mozart Serenade No. 6 in D Major, K. 239 for string quartet and string orchestra." Joan Griffing, chair of EMU's music department, will conduct this short but delightful work.
The concert is a benefit for EMU's music department student scholarship fund. Suggested admission is $10 at the door.
