Musicologist to Highlight Bach Festival Composers
Miloš Velimirović, musicologistMusicologist Miloš Velimirović will give a preview of the 15th annual Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival with a presentation at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 22, in the Alexander Mack room of the Houff Community Center at Bridgewater Retirement Community
The 15th annual Bach Festival will be held June 10-17 at Eastern Mennonite University on the theme, "Bach and Some Admirers."
Dr. Velimirović will discuss both Chopin piano concertos, the Brahms "Requiem" and his "Serenade in A Major," and Mendelssohn’s "String Symphony No. 5 in B-flat Major," among the selections to be performed at this year's festival.
Dr. Velimirović earned a diploma in the history of fine arts at the University of Belgrade prior to earning MA and PhD degrees at Harvard. He taught music at Yale University (1957-69), the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1969-73) and at the University of Virginia (1973-1993), and received a Fulbright fellowship to teach in Yugoslavia in 1985.
In 2004 Dr. Velimirović received an honorary doctorate from the University of Athens, Greece, for his work on Byzantine chant, for which he is considered an international expert, along with his expertise in the history of Slavonic music and the history of 18th-century Italian opera.
He has written several books and has had numerous articles published in such well-known music sources as The New Oxford History of Music, volume II, 2nd ed., and The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians.
Dr. Velimirović and his wife live at the Bridgewater Retirement Community.
His lecture is open to everyone free of charge.
