EMU Jazz Group to Tour Northeast

EMU Jazz Group to Tour Northeast
"EMU Jazz and Swing Sisters," a big band ensemble from Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Va., will present programs in western New York and Ontario, Canada, in early January.
The 24-member group, directed by Dr. Steve Sachs, professor of music at EMU, will play jazz arrangements of hymns and spirituals and big band tunes 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, at Alden Mennonite Church, 923 Two Rod Road, Alden; and 10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, at Toronto United Mennonite Church, 1774 Queen St. West, Toronto.
The group’s repertoire features sacred hymn and spiritual arrangements of jazz compositions. The Swing Sisters, a women’s close-harmony vocal ensemble, will accompany some selections.
EMU Jazz & Swing Sisters performs regularly on campus, for churches, civic groups and school audiences. During a ten-day spring break 2002 tour, the group gave concerts in Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia and Florida, including a performance at the Mennonite Health Assembly in Knoxville.
The group’s latest compact disc recording features portions of its 20th annual spring concert performed Apr. 5, 2002 on campus.
The public programs were planned in conjunction with attendance at the annual convention of the International Association for Jazz Education being held Jan. 9-11 in Toronto.
The services at both locations are open to everyone free of charge.
