EMU Prof Compiles New Albums

John Horst at radio station(Mennonite Mission Network) – John L. Horst, an associate professor of physics at Eastern Mennonite University, has compiled two new CD collections of classic hymns taken from the old "Mennonite Hour" radio program.

"Magnify the Lord" is a collection of hymns and anthems highlighting various aspects of the Christian experience, and "Easter Hallelujah!" focuses on the suffering, crucifixion, resurrection and ascension of Christ. The first album includes selections from the men’s quartet, ladies’ sextet and triple trio, while the Easter collection features the mixed chorus, ladies’ sextet, men’s quartet and chorus.

"The basic Mennonite Hour sound is unmistakable in these collections: simple arrangements, rich harmony, and strong melody," said Horst, who sang bass in the Mennonite Hour Men's Quartet from 1956-1963. "The focus was on the communication of the Gospel message rather than performance," he said.

"The Mennonite Hour," a weekly radio program, was broadcast from 1952 to 1979 as a media outreach of the Mennonite Board of Missions, a predecessor agency of Mennonite Mission Network.

Horst also produces and hosts "Mostly Mennonite, Mostly a Cappella" on Sunday mornings over WEMC, 91.7 FM in Harrisonburg, and uses music from The Mennonite Hour library in each program.

"Magnify the Lord" includes such favorites as "Magnificat," "O Thou in Whose Presence," "I Will Arise and Go to Jesus," and "My Task." "Easter Hallelujah!" includes two traditional Mennonite Easter hymns: "In the Garden" and "Christ Who Left His Home In Glory," along with many other favorites.

The CDs are $12.95 each and cassettes are $7.95. Quantity pricing is available. For more information call 800-999-3534 or visit www.mennomedia.org/resources.
