EMU Theater to Stage Shakespeare Comedy

The Comedy of ErrorsThe Eastern Mennonite University Theater is presenting Shakespeare’s immortal farce, "A Comedy of Errors," Friday through Sunday, March 12-14 and March 19-21 in the Old Gym Theater in the University Commons. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. for each performance.

Generally considered to be Shakespeare’s first play - and one of his funniest - "A Comedy of Errors" tells the tale of two sets of identical twins, separated at birth, who, unbeknownst to each and to anyone else, end up in the same town together. They create a circus of confusion as they are mistaken one for the other by wives, lovers, friends, business partners, and ultimately, the law.

"The play's wonderfully drawn characters, brilliant farcical complications, and wry social commentary make it immediately appealing to audiences of all ages, and the physical comedy and entertaining plot twists make it a great choice for young people who are being introduced to Shakespeare," said Paul Hildebrand, the play director and associate professor of theater at EMU.

This fast-paced production will be performed in-the-round, and features a 16-member student cast in a 90-minute performance without intermission.

The Comedy of Errors Set design for the EMU Theater production is by Phil Grayson; costumes are by Erin West; stage combat and movement choreography is by Cathy Brookshire; and lighting design is by EMU Theater student Davi R. Soesilo.

A special feature of this presentation will be a one-time pre-show dinner on Sunday, Mar. 14, served buffet-style in the beautifully-appointed President’s reception room on main floor of the University Commons. Limited to 35 patrons, the dinner will feature a menu of Chicken Cordon Bleu, spinach salad, wild rice blend, sautéed squash, zucchini peppers and onions, assorted dinner rolls, white raspberry three-layer cake and amaretto cheesecake, tea and coffee. Seating begins at 5:45 p.m.

Theatergoers who wish to enjoy the dinner and play feature must make reservations by Thursday, Mar. 11. Tickets for the dinner and show are $23.

Show-only tickets for all performances are $3 for children ten and under; $6 for students and senior citizens; $8 for adult advance reservation; and $10 for adult tickets purchased the day of the show.
