Noted Poet Julia Kasdorf to Speak

Julia Kasdorf The language and literature department at Eastern Mennonite University will hold another "Writers Read" program 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Mar. 11, in Martin Chapel of the seminary building at EMU.

Julia Kasdorf, an associate professor of English at Penn State University and a nationally-known poet, will speak on "J. W. Yoder: Singer, Scribe and Prophet."

Kasdorf will give an illustrated talk on the life and writings of Amish musician and writer Joseph W. Yoder, author of "Rosanna of the Amish." Her presentation will offer a window into the Amish community and insight into one man’s struggle to balance tradition with the right to intellectual liberty.

Kasdorf studied creative writing and English education at New York University where she earned B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees and is committed to teaching and learning in and outside of school.

Her books of poetry include "Eve's Striptease" and "Sleeping Preacher." She is also the author of "The Body and the Book: Writing from a Mennonite Life" (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2001).
