Noted Poet Julia Kasdorf to Speak
The
language and literature department at Eastern Mennonite
University will hold another "Writers Read"
program 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Mar. 11, in Martin Chapel
of the seminary building at EMU.
Julia Kasdorf, an associate professor of English at Penn State University and a nationally-known poet, will speak on "J. W. Yoder: Singer, Scribe and Prophet."
Kasdorf will give an illustrated talk on the life and writings of Amish musician and writer Joseph W. Yoder, author of "Rosanna of the Amish." Her presentation will offer a window into the Amish community and insight into one man’s struggle to balance tradition with the right to intellectual liberty.
Kasdorf studied creative writing and English education at New York University where she earned B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees and is committed to teaching and learning in and outside of school.
Her books of poetry include "Eve's Striptease" and "Sleeping Preacher." She is also the author of "The Body and the Book: Writing from a Mennonite Life" (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2001).
Admission to the program, which includes dinner, is $7. Advance reservations should be made by noon, Mar. 5, by calling the EMU box office at 540-432-4582.
