Local Students Headline Orchestra Concert

The Shenandoah Valley Youth Orchestra concert at 7 p.m. Sunday, Mar. 28, will feature solos by three local high school seniors. These students, chosen by audition, will be accompanied by the Youth Orchestra.

Turner Ashby High senior Martin King.

Martin King will perform a movement of Mozart’s Horn Concerto #3. He is the son of Sanford and Phyllis King. A senior at Turner Ashby High School, King is in his third year with the Youth Orchestra and is principal French horn. He has been in both District and City/County Honors Band six times and has been in the orchestra of three musicals at school.

A private student of Bill Liddle, King was drum major of the Cavalcade champion Marching Knights and was named Best Drum Major in Class A at the Parade of Champions. He is a member of the National Honors Society, vice president of the Turner Ashby chapter of the Tri-M Music Honors Society, and is a member of the Latin Club and PoliticsWOW.

Rebecca Peck

Rebecca Peck will perform "Kol Nidre" by Bruch, a solo for cello and orchestra. She is the daughter of Tom and Linda Peck of Timberville. A student of Mary Kay Adams, Ms. Peck is also principal cellist of the Shenandoah Valley Academy in New Market where she is a senior in the Honors Program. She accompanies the concert choir and sings with the Shenandoans.

A member of the National Honor Society, Peck has been the assistant to Harlen Miller, music department chairman, for four years. She is also an active church music at the Academy as well as at the New Market Seventh-day Adventist Church and Trinity Church of Christ in Timberville where she is music director.

Sarah Spangler Sachs

Sarah Spangler Sachs will perform a movement of Khachaturian’s "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra." She is the daughter and piano student of Stephen and Carolyn Sachs, and is a senior honor roll student at Broadway High School.

She has performed in the Bland Competition, the PTF/EMU Piano Festival, and the National Piano Guild Auditions. She has participated in numerous school music groups, including Honors Choir and Marching Band, and has performed in four musicals. Ms. Sachs was selected for the Virginia State Senior Honors Choir and Virginia All State Choir as well as District Symphonic Band and All City-County Honors Band. She is an active member of Otterbein United Methodist Church in Harrisonburg.

The Youth Orchestra is directed by Maria Lorcas, a violin teacher with EMU’s Preparatory Music Program. The 35-member orchestra includes students from Rockingham, Shenandoah and Augusta counties as well as Harrisonburg city. Also performing in the concert is the Junior Strings ensemble, director by Sharon M. Miller. Both groups will perform a work by guest conductor/composer Efrain Amaya from Pittsburgh. Pa.

Admission to the concert is a suggested $5 donation at the door. A reception will follow the program.
