EMU to Stage Bilingual Musical
The bilingual musical, written by Teatro Chirmol members, is a humorous reflection of the changing demographics of Harrisonburg.
A Hispanic family moves in across the street from a retired American who is concerned with the absence of curtains in their windows. The situation escalates to involve the whole neighborhood in a conflict of values and finally in seeking a resolution. Musical numbers, which echo popular Latino dance tunes, include "The Undocumented Anthem" and "The Remedy [for living in the U.S.]."
Teatro Chirmol, in its second year, is comprised of Latino youth from the local community as well as students from EMU. The group "seeks to give authentic voice to the local Latino community, integrate Latino youth with university students and provide community education about the assets and challenges of living biculturally in the Shenandoah Valley," according to director Tonya Osinkosky.
Tickets are $3 for adults, $1 for students and children and are on sale at the EMU box office, 432-4582, or at the door.
