JMU Prof to Exhibit Works at EMU

Sang Yoon art detail

Eastern Mennonite University's first public art exhibit of the new school year will open Sunday, Sept. 4, in the third floor gallery of EMU's Hartzler Library.

Representative works by Sang Yoon, professor of graphic design at James Madison University, will go on display with a reception for the artist 2:30-4 p.m. that afternoon in the gallery.

Yoon's exhibit will include graphic works created for clients throughout her career as well as "self-motivated" pieces - the two areas being different because they start with different issues in mind.

"Graphic design, unlike fine art, usually involves a client," Yoon noted. Working with clients to meet their objectives, she creates logo designs, brochures, posters and identity projects.

Yoon's self-motivated pieces are expressions of political, social and cultural changes and events.

"With my living experiences between Asian and American/western culture I like using a lot of empty space, the negative spaces, as part of my design," she said. A major theme has been "Old Glory Revisited." She will also display handmade books.

The artist has been a faculty member in the school of art and art history at JMU since 1988. She began her career with two companies in Seoul, South Korea in the early 1980s.

The exhibit will be open for viewing daily during regular library hours through Oct. 7. Admission is free.
