EMU Jazz Group Has Weekend Tour
"EMU Jazz and Swing Sisters," a big band ensemble at Eastern Mennonite University, will present a program of worship in music 11 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, at Duffey Memorial United Methodist Church, Moorefield, W.Va.
The group will also give a concert 7 p.m. that evening at Linden Heights Baptist Church, 371 Linden Drive, Staunton, Va. A love offering will be taken.
The 24-member ensemble, directed by Dr. Steve Sachs, professor of music at EMU, will play sacred jazz arrangements and spirituals as performed by the Chris McDonald Orchestra along with standards and contemporary tunes.
The "Swing Sisters," a close-harmony vocal group, will accompany some selections.
EMU Jazz formed during the 1982-83 academic year in response to student interest. Each year the group performs on campus and in schools and churches in the broader community and goes on tour during spring mid-semester break. This year's ten-day tour included concerts in Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, including a stop at Moorefield's historic McCoy-McMechen Theater.
The ensemble has released its latest compact disc, "EMU Jazz and Swing Sisters 2003," featuring portions of the 21st annual spring concert performed in April in EMU's Lehman Auditorium.
