EMU Names New Station Manager
Jon Kauffmann-Kennel of Elkhart, Ind., has been named manager of WEMC, a non-commercial FM radio station at Eastern Mennonite University. He will begin July 14, 2003.
Kauffmann-Kennel succeeds Phil Easley, who left after two years to become manager of a community radio station in Columbia, Mo. He will be responsible to supervise student workers and station volunteers, oversee programming and cultivate membership and underwriting.
"WEMC has growing membership support," said Shirley B. Yoder, vice president for enrollment and marketing. "Jon brings professionalism, many years of experience in public and educational radio and understands the need to keep local radio connected to the community it serves," she added.
Kauffmann-Kennel was manager of WGCS-FM at Goshen (Ind.) College and taught part time as an assistant professor in the communications program there.
Earlier, he was program director at WVPE-FM, a National Public Radio Station in Elkhart.
He is a member of the board of directors of the Association of Music Personnel in Public Radio (AMPPR).
Kauffmann-Kennel earned a B.A. degree in communication at Goshen College and an M.A. in communication at the University of Iowa. He is doing graduate coursework toward an M.A. in theological studies with an ethics emphasis at Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary, Elkhart.
He is married to Mary Kauffmann-Kennel, a registered nurse at the OSMC Pain Management Center in Elkhart. The couple has two children - Jaron, a junior at Goshen College, and Michael, a junior at Concord High School, Elkhart.
WEMC, at 91.7 on the FM dial, is the oldest non-commercial radio station in Virginia, founded in 1955. The station airs a mix of classical, bluegrass and world music, jazz and sacred/choral music with world news and features from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily (11 p.m. Fridays).
