EMU Announces Dean as New Men's Hoops Coach

Eastern Mennonite University Athletic Director Larry Martin announced the hiring of Kirby Dean, former head boys basketball coach at Waynesboro High School, as head men's basketball coach.

Dean, a graduate of EMU, just completed one year as the head coach for the boys basketball coach at Waynesboro High School. His team made an impressive 5-2 run to end the season and finished 7-17 overall.

Dean spent eight years as the assistant basketball coach with Virginia Military Institute alongside head coach Bart Bellairs. His primary duties included recruitment of student-athletes, directing individual workout programs, and development of the small forward position. Dean also coached the VMI J.V. basketball program for seven seasons.

As a collegian at EMU, Dean was named captain in his junior and senior campaigns and finished his career as a four-year letterwinner. He was voted defensive player of the year for three straight seasons. Following his graduation, Dean began his coaching career as an assistant coach while earning his masters degree from James Madison University.

Dean, a native of Harrisonburg, Va., is married to the Regina C. Bellar of Harper, Kan. and presently resides in Fairfield, Virginia.
