The faculty and staff of Eastern Mennonite University
saluted five colleagues who are retiring and cited more than 40 others
for years of service during the annual recognition dinner held Apr.
28.
The retirees are: Phyllis Y. Coulter, professor of
teacher education, after 13 years of service; M. June Drescher, administrative
suite secretary/receptionist, 28 years; Glenn M. Kauffman, professor
of chemistry, 38 years; Ray E. Horst, assistant professor of Spanish,
12 years; and Sarah A. Weaver, Information Office receptionist/operator,
25 years.
The five received engraved plaques, gold coins and
their choice of an EMU captains chair or cash from EMU President
Joseph L. Lapp. They also were given special tributes from their respective
departments.
The program included a surprise recognition for President
Lapp and his wife Hannah M. Lapp from Sheryl K. Wyse, chair of the EMU
board of trustees. Wyse recited a list of accomplishments and noted
other ways that the couple had enhanced the university during their
16-year tenure that ends June 30. She gave them several mementos and
announced that the board has designated Lapp "president emeritus"
of EMU.
Lois B. Bowman, librarian in the Menno Simons Historical
Library and Archives, and Monroe E. Wood, head groundskeeper, headed
the list of persons honored for long years of service with 40-year certificates.
Joseph W. Mast, professor of computer science and
director of the M.T. Brackbill Planetarium, was cited for 35 years of
service.
Certificates for 25 years of service went to Sandra
L. Brownscombe, assistant professor of teacher education and physical
education, and to Stephen W. Sachs, professor of music.
Nevin J. Bender, associate groundskeeper, physical
plant; and Lawrence M Yoder, professor of missiology at Eastern Mennonite
Seminary, received 20-year service certifications.

coordinator, undergraduate admissions office; Ruth Ann Burkholder,
Information Office coordinator; David W. Emswiler, HVAC-plumbing assistant,
physical plant; C. Eldon Kurtz, director of physical plant; Gretchen
H. Maust, office coordinator, sociology-social work department; Karen
B. Miller, director, Institutional Research and Effectiveness; Anil
D. Solanki, professor of Old Testament in the seminary; and Lester
R. Zook, professor of physical education.
Ten years: Gregory T. Becker, conferences
and events director; Rachel J. Diener, teacher, Early Education Center;
L. Alan Eby, associate professor of psychology; Janice L. Gerber,
Information Office receptionist/operator; William H. Hairston, grounds
supervisor, physical plant; Jean R. Hawk, professor of teacher education;
Joyce C. Hedrick, disability services coordinator, Academic Support
Center; Violet M. Horst, assistant professor of nursing; Janice K.
Liskey, accounting supervisor, business office; Kirsten L. Parmer,
graphic designer, marketing services department; Gloria I. Rhodes,
assistant professor, justice, peace and conflict studies; Lucinda
Schlabach, office manager, physical education and athletics department;
Amy K. Springer, assistant undergraduate dean and coordinator of student
success; Annie B. Thompson, womens residence custodian; and
Herman H. Weaver, Jr., associate professor of psychology.
Five years: Pamela D. Arbogast, lead custodian,
University Commons; Owen D. Byer, department chair, mathematical sciences;
Jayne Wenger Clemens, instructor in social work; Christina J. Graber-Neufeld,
institutional research analyst and administrative coordinator, Institutional
Research and Effectiveness department; Douglas S. Graber-Neufeld,
assistant professor of biology; Nancy R. Heisey, department chair,
Bible and religion department; Janice M. Jenner, director of the Institute
for Justice and Peacebuilding, Conflict Tranformation Program; Kevin
D. Longenecker, controller in business affairs; Daniel E. Marple,
Jr., systems engineer, Information Systems; Patricia H. Martin, co-director,
Summer Peacebuilding Institute; Barbara J. Miller, EMU Early Learning
Center director; Julie M. Roes, custodian; Evelyn S. Sauder, education
