McCurdy to Lead Royals Softball
J. D. (John) McCurdy has accepted the head women's softball coaching position at Eastern Mennonite University, effective Aug. 1, 2003.
McCurdy, a 1978 graduate of Bridgewater College with a degree in health and physical education, has been a successful high school and Amateur Softball Association coach since the early 1990's. His teams at Turner Ashby High School have compiled an overall record of 90-6, and McCurdy's ASA teams have won five state championships
"Coach McCurdy brings a wealth of coaching experience to our program," said EMU Athletics Director Larry Martin. "These experiences, being a Harrisonburg resident and having graduated from a local college were factors in the invitation to join our staff. We expect J. D. to transfer his success in the ASA and at TA to the Royals program and to consistently contend for the ODAC championship, which leads to participating in the NCAA playoffs," Martin added.
McCurdy inherits a team that won only five games and missed the ODAC playoffs. "We graduated one player," Martin noted. "With some adjustments and the energy and hard work J.D. will put into the program our team will surprise some people, maybe as early as next season."
McCurdy is the owner of a local Nationwide Insurance agency. He and his wife Diane, also a Bridgewater graduate, have three children and reside in Bridgewater.
